Fourth U.S. pit bull fatality in first two weeks of December 2017
GOOCHLAND, Virginia––Pit bull advocate Bethany Lynn Stephens, 22, on December 14, 2017 became the record 36th human killed by a pit bull in the U.S. in one year, the 37th in the U.S. and Canada combined, and the 54th killed by a dog.
Goochland County Sheriff James Agnew told media that Stephens was the victim of an “absolutely grisly mauling” while walking her pit bulls Tonka and Pacman in a wooded area near her family’s home. Her father discovered her remains after she failed to return from the walk.
Agnew on December 18, 2017 elaborated that he and four of his deputies witnessed the two pit bulls eating from Stephens’ rib cage.

Sheriff suspected pits were bred for fighting
Stephens’ body “was guarded by two very large, brindle-colored pit bull dogs,” Agnew said, adding that he suspected they had been bred for fighting, according to Richmond Times-Dispatch reporter Ali Rockett.
Wrote Rockett, “Initial reports from the medical examiner’s office said Stephens – whom Agnew described as petite, 5-foot-1 and 125 pounds – had a cause of death ‘consistent with being mauled by these dogs.’ She had defensive wounds on her hands and arms, and it appears that she was alive when the animals attacked.”
Agnew on December 18, 2017 said the ongoing investigation had established that the two pit bulls had not been bred or trained for fighting, and were somewhat smaller than his initial estimate that each was as heavy as Stephens.
“Liked” Tia Torres’ projects

Said Agnew, reading from the initial autopsy report, “The first traumatic injury to her was to her throat and face. It appears she was taken to the ground, lost consciousness, and the dogs then mauled her to death.”
Stephens had posted Facebook “likes” for at least two pit bull breeders and many pit bull advocacy projects, including Tia Torres’ Villalobos Rescue Center and Torres’ television program Pit Bulls & Parolees.

Emily Mae Colvin
Emily Mae Colvin, 24, of Section, Alabama, had appeared to be the 34th human pit bull fatality in the U.S. in 2017, and the 35th in the U.S. and Canada combined, as of her death on December 7, 2017, a date that ANIMALS 24-7 predicted “will live in infamy only until the next fatal pit bull attack.”
Only one day later, on December 8, 2017, retired physician Bill Deneke, 70, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, died from head injuries suffered when a pit bull knocked him down.
Three days after that, on December 11, 2017, Dorothy Ford, 76, was killed in her yard by her own six-year-old pit bull in Alsip, Illinois.
But ANIMALS 24-7 had meanwhile reclassified two fatalities occurring earlier in the year as having been inflicted by mastiff mixes rather than pit bulls, after obtaining better photographs of their facial features than were previously available.
Though still fatalities inflicted by molosser dogs closely related to pit bulls, those victims were not pit bull fatalities––which made Emily Mae Colvin the 33rd U.S. death of 2017 inflicted by pit bulls, with Deneke the 34th, Ford the 35th, and Stephens the 36th.

For every one of these lost lives, those who advocate for the continued proliferation of these WMDs should be help accountable. They won’t, of course. And the lives will just keep on being lost, because of the vehemence and vociferousness of the special-interest group that insists these dogs be Priority One in this society. Shameful and diabolical.

I hate people who love these ugly killer machines. They like their killing abillities and and ignore that the killer instinct cannot be controlled. Even if they appear nice this behavior can burst out easyily. It should be forbidden to buy them. The owners are fully responsible. In Europe are also many cases with playing children involved. These dogs are killers and very aggressive. You cant let them run around in public. It is also not allowed to run around with a lion on the leash! I am really sorry for all the victim. Especilly the not so strong and little people tend to buy these animals. They cannot control such dogs. No other should be harmed for some peoples’immature wishes to have one of these killers. Didn’t Dwarf Mamba also buy one of these dangerous dogs? I wonder what he liked in that breed and how he thought he could control one. Dont try to ever to handle these dogs. It is too obvious that the failure rate is much to high and not tolerable. So sad for the victims.

Hi Beth, incredibly sad to see you created an “animal welfare” site: filled with so much misinformation. Thankfully, the tide is changing and views like yours are becoming increasingly fringe. I urge you to check out others in law enforcement who really do see more than skin deep. Hopefully someday you will see that facts presented by experts mean more than your own personal feelings about a particular breed masqueraded so disgustingly as concern on this site. In the end, we all want a safer world but hatred against a type of animal or human is not the way to achieve that.
Sophia: If you actually viewed our Animals 24-7 website, you would have found more than 1300 articles filled with critical information about all animals and the humane community worldwide. What you have decided to call hatred toward an animal, namely a pit bull, is actually reportage of the absolute truth that pit bulls are committing the majority of all fatal and disfiguring dog attacks in the US and Canada. And what is becoming increasingly “fringe” as you call it is turning a blind eye to public safety as more and more innocent pets and people are maimed and killed by pit bulls. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to address your misconceptions!

Law enforcement? The ones getting money and dogs from the Animal Farm Foundation? About as legit as the Drs in the 1950s that testified for tobacco companies. And fringe? Why are so many pit bull type dogs dumped at the shelter?

Many focus on thugs wanting a tough dog as the problem. I think the bigger problem are those who are on an ego trip from ‘rescuing’ dangerous dogs and the opportunity to feel wonderful about themselves for taming a wild animal with love & kisses – people like Bethany Stevens & Linda Patterson. I think those people are more of a problem then those who want a dog to intimidate the neighbors.
