Impounded pit bulls.
Dogs kill & disfigure more people in U.S. & Canada than Jihadis & far-right “wing nuts” combined
Who is most likely to kill or disfigure you or your child––a Jihadi terrorist armed with guns and bombs, a far-right militia member practicing “open carry” of weapons, or a dangerous dog?
The correct answer is the dog. And dog attack mayhem is rising by far the most steeply.

Jihadi violence in North America has mostly trended down since 2001. Right wing terrorism, though rising in recent years, peaked in 1995.
Pit bull attacks up 830%
But fatal and disfiguring pit bull attacks are up 830% since 2007, when the Humane Society of the U.S., Best Friends Animal Society, and American SPCA ramped up pit bull advocacy after the arrest of football player Michael Vick on dogfighting charges for which he was eventually convicted.
Jihadists, or Islamicist extremists, by one commonly cited reckoning, killed 48 people in the U.S. and Canada during 2015. Far right extremists killed 47 people.
Jihadists and far-right terrorists have each injured about 260 people in the U.S. per year, on average, over the past decade.

Record numbers of deaths
A record 46 people were killed by dog attacks in the U.S. and Canada during 2015, including an also-record 34 people killed by pit bulls, two more than the previous record of 32, reached in 2012.
Dogs committed 614 fatal or disfiguring attacks in the U.S. and Canada during 2015, more than Jihadists and far-right terrorists combined.

Record disfigurements too
Pit bulls alone disfigured 459 people––five more than ever before.
Among the 648 total human victims of pit bull attacks in which at least one person was killed or disfigured were at least 209 children and 354 adults.
The number of known child victims in 2015 declined from the 2014 record of 266, and from the previous record of 214, reached in 2013, apparently because word is getting out that allowing children to be around pit bulls is potentially deadly, but the 209 child victims in 2015 would have been a record in any earlier year.
The 354 adult pit bull victims in 2015 was 73 above the previous record. 2015 was the eighth consecutive year that the number of adult pit bull victims increased.

2015 deaths were triple the toll 1930-1960
The dog attack death toll in 2015 alone was triple the U.S. toll for the entire 30 years 1930-1960, during which time almost all dogs ran free and under 1% were sterilized in any manner. But pit bulls accounted for “only” 60% of the fatalities between 1930 and 1960, compared to 73% in 2015.
Retrospective data collection has established that pit bulls have accounted for half or more of all fatal dog attacks in every 10-year time frame since 1844, while making up less than 1% of the U.S. dog population for most of that time, and less than 6% now.
Even before 2007 the frequency of fatal and disfiguring pit bull attacks had risen explosively for 25 years.

Explosive rise
In the entire decade from 1982 to 1992, 104 pit bulls attacked 44 children and 60 adults, killing 18 of the victims, disfiguring 36. Fifty victims escaped without fatal or disfiguring injuries in attacks in which others were killed or disfigured.
Most of those totals were exceeded in 2002 alone, and in almost every year since. 2011 was the last year with fewer than 30 pit bull attack fatalities; 2008 the last year with fewer than 20.

Agencies squelch breed info
The pit bull contribution to total deaths and disfigurements in recent years might be much higher, except that under pressure from pit bull advocates many animal control agencies and humane societies, and even some news media, have begun withholding breed-specific information about attacks.
From 1982 through 2013, only 45 documented fatal or disfiguring attacks were by dogs of unidentified breed, but in 2014 alone, 36 fatal or disfiguring attacks were attributed to dogs of unidentified breed.
In 2015 the number of fatal or disfiguring attacks by dogs of allegedly “unidentified” breed more than doubled to 78––even though in most instances the dogs were impounded by law enforcement.

49 attacks by shelter dogs
Forty-nine fatal or disfiguring attacks in 2015, or about one in 7.5, were by dogs who had been rehomed by animal shelters, among them 39 pit bulls. No other breed type was involved in more than two attacks by shelter dogs.
ANIMALS 24-7 is still tabulating and evaluating the 2015 data on dog attacks against other animals. Pit bulls in recent years have accounted for more than 95% of all dog attacks in which other pets and/or livestock were killed, resulting in upward of 50,000 animal fatalities per year.
Our complete tables on Dog attack deaths & Maimings, U.S. & Canada, September 1982 to December 31, 2015 appear below, followed by a separately compiled set of notes on fatal attack victims from volunteer Jan Smith.
Further particulars on the 2015 dog attack fatalities from Jan Smith, with her prefatory comments:
Here is my updated list of U.S. and Canadian fatalities, by date, name and age of victim, and details about the dog(s) and mode of attack. Foreign deaths are listed separately at the end.
Please note that I do NOT participate in the kennel club game of putting fictional labels on “breeds” that are in truth pit bulls or pit bull mixes. For example, where some “breed” is in truth a mastiff/pit bull dog mix (such as the bullmastiff or the Cane Corso), I list it as a pit bull type dog/pit mix.
Stars (**) indicate that the killer was someone’s beloved “family pet” pit bull who was never abused or neglected. The double dagger (‡) indicates that the “family pet” pit bull belonged to the deceased person or the person’s family.

Thank you for the excellent data. Just think how much higher the numbers would be if you added other countries.
Jan Smith’s count of fatal attacks, appearing below ours, does include non-U.S. and Canada attacks.
Thank you for continuing to be brave enough and honest enough to keep reporting the truth. Sharing to social media, in eternal hope of educating and enlightening.
Thank you Merritt. We appreciate all the work you put into this.
You are clearly showing a growing trend of violence from pit bulls over the last 25 years. Are you also advocating for an action to stem this trend?
We have reported about quite a few attempts at implementing legislative solutions, including the unenforced ban on keeping pit bulls in Miami, the lightly enforced bans in Denver, Aurora, and the province of Ontario, and the requirements that pit bulls be sterilized in effect in San Francisco and San Bernardino County. Each approach works to the extent that law enforcement and the judiciary are willing to uphold the law.
While pit bull advocates blame the media for too many pit bull reports, it is likely the numbers are much, much higher.
Very few attacks make the media. Neither the police nor Animal Control tell the media about pit bull attacks. Unless the attacks are very public, they go unreported. Typically, as in the recent home invasion and pit bull attack in Fort St John BC, the police did not report the attack and the media did not know about this horrifying attack until a member of the family contacted them.
In Vancouver, Canada in 2014, according to a FOI request, there were 21 pit bull attacks on people and 19 attacks on animals in Vancouver by pit bull type dogs, plus an additional 37 attacks by pit bulls that were recorded but not followed up. NONE were reported in the media.
Many thanks, Merritt. I am saving this to a file for future reference and have shared it on social media. Mary
You go to all of the trouble to expose all of the problems they have caused but you say very little about the most abused dog in the history of dogdom. If people are abused and neglected the way the pits are, you can bet they usually turn out to be murders.
It is time now to tell us what you propose to do about the pit bull problem and how you are going to help solve it. Do not tell me that you simply spay and neuter all of them. That does not work in the ghetto. We know that for a fact. Those of us who are working on a daily basis to help save the lives of these dogs that are horribly abused and neglected, know that most people in poor neighborhoods will not spay and neuter their dogs. You cannot pay them to do it. Dog fighters won’t spay and neuter them either. The economy is so bad that law enforcement won’t enforce the policy anyway.
Jan Smith’s annotated list of fatal pit bull attacks in 2015, and her similar list compiled in 2014, posted below our own 2014 data compilation, clearly demonstrates that the overwhelming majority of pit bulls who kill people have neither been abused nor neglected, and are kept as indoor household pets. Accordingly, it is time for the humane community to abandon the Big Lie that mistreatment of pit bulls, albeit frequent, has anything to do with the high rate of pit bull involvement in killing and disfiguring people and other animals. All dog breed types are frequently abused and neglected; only pit bulls, bred for centuries to kill and maim, figure so disproportionately often in death and disfigurement cases.
As to what to do about the problem, if people with pit bulls cannot be persuaded to sterilize their dogs, prohibiting possession of pit bulls would appear to be the reasonable next step. Along the way, the humane community needs to stop promoting, defending, and in all ways possible encouraging people to acquire more pit bulls.
So should we rip the speed limit signs off the highways because people are going to speed anyways? No. You leave them in place and prosecute the speeders when you catch them.
Legislate spay and neuter. Although it is not an instant fix, it is the BEST step in the BEST direction.
or
We can take the advice of pit bull advocates and humane organizations who “offer” other alternatives such as voluntary spay and neuter programs, more education (fluff propaganda) and the rest of the current status quo that is FAILING. How nice of them to offer something that is already in place and heading in the wrong direction..
As a rescue worker, what do you propose?
Glenda,
You go to all of the trouble to rescue these dangerous dogs, yet are not part of the real solution. There is no way that you can possibly save all of the pit bulls and their derivatives who need homes. Without full disclosure about the animals people will continue to take them home and they will continue to turn. Until pit bull advocates and their supporters tell the truth about these dogs, that they are more dangerous than other types of dogs and kill and attack people and pets more often, there will be no solutions. If you are truly an advocate for these dogs, who are continuously creating havoc in our society, then you will start telling the truth and you will urge others in your position to tell the truth as well, to bring about crackdowns on ownership, breeding, fighting, and adopting out dangerous animals.
Thank you Merritt for your tireless work in this area. Your work continues to threaten the false information provided by pit bull enthusiasts. Because you are a threat to these people, we continue to see people attack and attempt to discredit you. But stats are stats and your well-backed statistics stand strong for themselves. I look forward to the day when your statistics are instrumental in passing successful breed-specific legislation across this country. Thank you for helping save countless lives as people learn the truth. You are much appreciated!
Here’s a start.
Stop helping pit bull “advocacy” (fronts for pit bull breeder interests) deceive, market and promote these dogs into an epidemic of overbreeding, suffering and abuse, and well as increasing suffering and abuse for other animals and people.
Pit bull “activists” have made things so much worse for the pit bulls themselves, but never do they seem to acknowledge their mistakes and understand how they have been used by the very people who exploit pit bulls for money.
It is the pit bull failed “advocates” who have a lot of explaining to do to everyone. It is a pity to be ignorant and to be used, but when is faced with reality it is a crime to be wilfully ignorant and to wilfully allow oneself to be used.
Thanks for all the data. Strange how the only people that can identify a pit bull are folk who own them? but no one else can figure it out cos all cops, animal control & vets don’t know one when they see them. Excuse the sarcasm.
Thank you for giving the cold facts here! I get so tired of the horrible excuses these owners give such as “well it’s not the dog but the owner”, well the owner is not the one who mauled or bit the victim. It just seems as people with little education, and no sense of decorum gravitate towards these trashy animals.
Merritt, a big thank you to taking the time to put this kind of article together. It must have taken a lot of work and I doubt if we could find it like this anywhere else. Very appreciated. Only wish your font wasn’t this light grey color that makes it harder to read.
Very interesting data and article. Thank you, Merritt.
Have you compared the approximate number of pit bulls alive today with the numbers of other breeds?
This data is in the far right column of the tables appearing below the article. Pit bulls and all of their close mixes and derivatives together make up 6.6% of the U.S. and Canadian dog population, but account for more than 70% of the fatal and disfiguring attacks: more than 10 times as many as would represent proportional risk.
I wouldn’t donate to your bullshit organization if I had money to wipe my butt with. You are a despicable, uneducated filthy cretin. I hope the fleas of a thousand camels invade your tiny genitals.
Be a real man and stop spreading hate for innocent creatures. Go do something productive and get your facts straight. I spit on you!

The facts seem to aggravate those who put the value of pit bulls over the people who must live with and around them. The venomous comment of Ms. Licari is evidence of that.
The Fulton County Dog Warden in Ohio, is dealing with a situation right now that points out the problem facing the agencies that have been employed to protect the public. We know that the “SAFER” tests are unreliable and adopted pit bulls are not reflecting the behavior/ temperament promised by these shelters.
When the authorities act to protect their communities, they are attacked by Pit bull rescue organizations who place these dogs in unsuspecting homes with people who do not have the wherewithal to manage such dogs.

I am so glad I am not that dog warden. That kind of pressure against doing your job responsibly is sickening.

I thought you might want to share the following article about unethical behavior by the media members that personally work for the financial interests of the pit bull lobby.
This woman didn’t even bother to put this propaganda in her own words. She just repeated what she was given
Keep in mind that she is a managing story editor. She has some influence over what reporters write and can direct stories, and censor information.
http://blogs.theprovince.com/2016/01/11/when-media-members-are-pit-bull-apologists/the financial
I am sorry but I think my link to the Province article doesn’t work
if you do a web search for the Province When Media Members are Pit Bull apologists
you can find it
http://blogs.theprovince.com/2016/01/11/when-media-members-are-pit-bull-apologists/
The culprit is Courtney Mimidis, a producer at WSLS Newschannel 10 in Virginia. She is actually more a managing story editor, which means she makes CONTENT decisions for other reporters for the newschannel.
Her repetition of propaganda from the dog fighting circles denying the heritage of their dogs and why they breed them (for the obvious reasons of protecting their activities) will chill you.
When the young child Payton Sawyers was killed by a pit bull, WSLS refused to even acknowledge the breed.
