Good news from California!
Good news from the California State Fair! For the second consecutive year, there will be NO goldfish given away as prizes, and NO hermit crabs (all taken from the wild) sold as pets, thereby sparing the lives and suffering of many thousands of animals. And NO pregnant sows in those godawful farrowing crates. Can I get an Amen?
Kudos to CEO Rick Pickering and the Fair Board for their compassion. Here’s hoping they will make these humane changes permanent policy. CalEXPO now hosts the most humane state fair in the country, a model for others to emulate.
And good ethics makes for good business. I’m betting that attendance will increase accordingly. The fair runs July 10-26. Be there!

Amen!! And thank you for all of YOUR great efforts to help bring these humane changes about.
Thank you Mr. Pickering for doing what you can to deliver a humane and positive state fair for animals and people!
Thank you for addressing this overlooked cruelty problem. I’ve seen fairs giving away live goldfish, green anole lizards, hermit crabs–and at one fair in Ohio–live rabbits.
