Shirley Temple was twice the American Humane Association “cover girl.”
Shirley Temple Black, 85, a film star from 1933 to 1950 and U.S. politician and diplomat from 1967 to 1992, died on February 11, 2014. As an adult she had no known connection with humane work, but at the height of her popularity, in June 1935 and January 1936, she was cover girl for The National Humane Review, a monthly magazine published by the American Humane Association, and in April 1936 made appearances for the AHA as junior chair of “Be Kind To Animals Week.” In that capacity, Shirley Temple appealed to drivers to avoid running over animals.
