Should we say “Trick or treat?”
With almost a week left of October, we should reach half a million readers for 2017 before Halloween, half again more than last year.
But we’re not doing tricks here, or posting click-bait single-paragraph “grumpy cat” photo captions & “cute dog” videos that treat the eyes, yet don’t really share anything new or urgent.
Our dog attack and hurricane coverage alone have informed hundreds of thousands of people about the realities of fast-changing crisis situations, with our coverage of cat, wildlife, and vegetarian/vegan issues not far behind.
More than 1,500 people read ANIMALS 24-7 every day, three times more than when we started in 2014 on less than a shoestring.
In three and a half years we’ve reached more than 1.3 million readers. Four thousand have posted comments. And we have changed the landscape in many ways for animals and humans who care about them.
That’s no trick. That’s tens of thousands of hours of hard work.
But we operate entirely on your donations.
No one else funds or supports ANIMALS 24-7 –– just you, our dedicated readers. And at this writing a week has passed since we last received even one red cent.
Nothing left to cut
Barring a last-minute miracle, we’re not going to get paid this month, but we don’t have anything to fall back on, and have nothing left to cut.
We’ve had to lay off our one paid research assistant, and suspended several behind-the-scenes electronic services that made our work easier. Almost a year ago we cancelled all commitments to attend conferences.
We know you want and value ANIMALS 24-7 because every day more and more of you read ANIMALS 24-7, forward articles, share our links through social media, and dig into our extensive online archives to find out more.
Not going to quit
So we are not going to quit, or back away from asking the hard questions, or challenging conventional thinking about animal issues that tends to get animal advocates (and animals) nowhere.
Helping animals through investigative reporting is what we long ago dedicated our lives to doing, and will keep on doing, come what may.
We know many other animal charities and causes are competing for your attention. They don’t do what we do. They don’t give you what ANIMALS 24-7 gives you. Among them, we are scarcely the warmest, cuddliest, cutest, and may not even seem to be an urgent priority.
But we need some help
We don’t do tricks for treats. We’re more like the owl who swoops through the darkness to see the unseen, asking “Who? What? Where? When? Why? How?”
But we do need some help, here and now.
